Post-it® Mini Cube offer generates a 23% response rate and a reduced cost per lead!

A test to determine how a free offer for a Post-it® Note Product affects response rates in direct mail efforts.

This direct mail exercise was targeted at confirmed computer owners including those with in-home businesses. All audience members responded to a nationwide survey verifying the fact that they do own a computer.

Two mailings, each sent to comparable groups of 1,000 people, were sent out encouraging recipients to send back a business reply card for more product information. For this study, 3M Computer Filters were chosen as the featured product.
The first mailing consisted of a "teaser" direct-mail flyer with a reply card redeemable for more information on 3M Computer Filters.
The second mailing contained the same literature. However, this mailing also offered a free Post-it® Mini Cube as an incentive for responding.

The first mailing resulted in 90 out of 1,000 reply cards returned for a cost per lead of $11.82.
The second mailing with the Post-it® Mini Cube offer yielded 226 out of 1,000 reply cards for a response rate of 23%. Although this mailing had a higher initial price tag than the first effort, it had a cost per lead of only $9.12 - a difference of $2.70 per lead and a response rate 2 1/2 times higher than the mailing without the offer!
